Meet Lisa Stark
Hi 👋. My name is Lisa. I am a wife, mum of 2 kids & a Social Worker for the past 20+yrs. Here is some of my story of journeying towards living a low tox lifestyle.
Since I was a child, I have always been sensitive to strong perfumes & incense. The reactions varied from mild nose & eye irritation, through to chronic sneezing, swelling tongue & face, hives. The perfume section at the front of large department stores was a nightmare for me.
When our children were born, they were diagnosed with significant food intolerances (the symptoms were noticed within the first few weeks of their lives). After much trial & error under the guidance of a dietician & allergist, they were placed on a very strict elimination diet, which saw an improvement in many of their symptoms. However, I noticed that they still seemed to be reacting to things & therefore assumed it must be environmental factors. I trialled eliminating nasty chemicals from our home, but it was so overwhelming as I learnt that they are everywhere. I pressed on, driven by wanting my children to have as normal a life as possible & not be so sensitive to the environment or the food they eat. This was an outcome that motivated me to spend the time researching solutions.
What has changed for me? I now read labels on EVERYTHING. I began to look at the products we were using in our house every day, in all parts of our daily routine (not just cleaning). I noticed that almost everything was laden with nasty chemicals and toxins. And we HAD been using these blindly for decades. We just didn’t know any better. We had blind trust that companies wouldn’t knowingly put harmful substances into their products, or that the governing authorities would be looking out for our well-being and regulate against this, to prevent them from doing so. Surely, if it is being sold in the supermarket, it’s got to be safe, right? Right??? Uhmmm, wrong. Many companies are starting to feel the pressure from people voting with their dollar and have begun to market “green” or “healthy” options. However, when you look at many of their ingredients, there is still so many hidden nasties still present.
It has been 2.5+ years since our family made this lifestyle change. And we have not looked back. We have seen soooo many wonderful results within my family’s health & wellbeing. It feels great to be more aware and to make informed choices about what comes into our home & what we choose to put in and on our bodies. While I can’t prevent our family from being exposed to every single nasty that is out there, it feels empowering to make choices that limits our exposure. Our kids have really been drawn to it also. It feels good to be educating them on making healthful choices for their future. It has also been gratifying to support family & friends to make the same healthful choices in removing toxic chemicals from their family’s routines too.
So, why am I here? The innate social worker within me, cares too much for people, to just sit by and watch others not “know better” and live in blind faith, as we had also been doing for so many years. While the journey we have been on with our children’s health has been extremely hard & stressful, it has also been a blessing. It has forced us to ask questions, look for answers, research & become more aware.
I love connecting with people where they are at, supporting people and helping them feel heard and cared about. I feel blessed and an overwhelming sense of gratitude at being able to lighten the load of others and helping people THRIVE, not just survive in this high-pressure journey we call Life.
